INTRODUCTION

Antimicrobials were first discovered six decades ago. There impact in the control of Microbial pathogens has been remarkable so much so that it has extended the life expectancy since that time. The ability to treat and manage simple infection was very possible and easily achieved through administration of antimicrobials either as liquids or solids. However, it is the consumption and usage of Antimicrobials that have put them in the mess of resistance (Ojo, et al., 2012; Fashae and Hendriksen, 2013).

The world consumption of antimicrobials is considerably high and irregular or unauthorized/self-adminstration has been at the helm, spear-heading the resistance campaign. Especially in developing nations were Antimicrobials can be purchased without prescription and laboratory diagnosis is rare. The consumption of antibiotics exposes them to microbes and use of antimicrobials in areas such as Agriculture as well as other abusive instances; non completion of dosage, poor adherence to prescription have contributed to microbial resistance (Fashae and Hendriksen, 2013; Adeyanju and Ishola, 2014; Adelowo et al., 2014; O’Neill, 2015; WHO, 2015; FAO, 2017).

Here, the focus is on antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria with intent to examine the state of antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria. Analysis through the years on the dwindling effectiveness of antimicrobials is being considered especially in the aspect of antibiotics. Microorganisms especially bacteria, are evaluated for their contributions to the resistance process. This write up will enlighten the readers on the state of antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria.
